Quick Answer

ChatGPT Ads are currently in a limited beta phase. The ChatGPT Ads Manager interface closely resembles Meta's Ads Manager, allowing advertisers to run campaigns based on "Clicks" or "Reach" across the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Instead of exact match keywords, it uses "Context Hints" to match ads to relevant AI conversations.

For months, the performance marketing world has been speculating about when OpenAI would monetize its massive user base through an advertising network. That day is officially here.

At AdShot Media, we recently secured beta access to the brand-new ChatGPT Ads Manager. We immediately launched a test campaign—becoming one of the first agencies globally to put real dollars behind this new platform.

Because we have spent the last 10+ years engineering high-intent Google Ads campaigns, we wanted to see exactly how OpenAI’s targeting compares. Here is an unfiltered, behind-the-scenes look at the platform, how to build a campaign, and our strategic advice for early adopters.

What the ChatGPT Ads Manager Looks Like

If you have ever launched a campaign on Facebook or Instagram, you will feel right at home here. The ChatGPT Ads Manager interface takes heavy inspiration from Meta Ads Manager, favoring a clean, simplified layout over the dense, highly technical dashboard of Google Ads.

Campaign Setup at a Glance

  • Current Objectives: You can optimize for "Clicks" (similar to Maximize Clicks in Google) or "Reach" (similar to a CPM model on YouTube).
  • Available Geographies: The beta is currently restricted to the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • Tracking: You can generate a native conversion tracking pixel to place in your website's header to track leads, checkouts, and content views.

Familiar setup flow.

The interface feels closer to Meta Ads Manager than the technical density of Google Ads.

But benchmarks are missing.

Simple platforms are easy to launch, but harder to judge without real CPL, CTR, and lead quality data.

How Targeting Works: "Context Hints" vs. Keywords

This is where the platform significantly diverges from traditional Search Engine Marketing (SEM).

In Google Ads, we use Exact Match and Phrase Match keywords to capture specific search intent. ChatGPT Ads do not use rigid keyword targeting. Instead, they use Context Hints.

The platform asks you to "Describe the conversion topics or keywords where your product or services may be relevant." OpenAI notes that these hints guide the AI's matching process but are not exact match rules.

What we've seen: This functions very similarly to "Search Themes" in Google's Performance Max (PMax) campaigns. For our test campaign, we input terms like "digital marketing agency" and "Google Ads management agency." The AI will use these hints to dynamically insert our ad into relevant user chat sessions.

Bidding and Cost Expectations

Because the platform is in its infancy, CPC (Cost Per Click) benchmarks do not exist yet. During our setup, we attempted to set a Maximum CPC bid of $0.50. The system immediately flagged it as "too low to deliver" and suggested a $3.00 CPC to ensure the ad would serve.

The AdShot Media Testing Strategy

At AdShot Media, we do not guess; we test. We are running our ChatGPT Ads campaign just like we would launch a cold Google Ads account:

  • The 14-Day Baseline: We are running our initial campaign for 7 to 14 days without making major adjustments.
  • Data Gathering: We are monitoring the actual CPC, the Click-Through Rate (CTR) inside the chat interface, and most importantly, the backend lead quality.

CPC Reality Check

We measure actual click cost, not suggested bid estimates.

02

CTR Inside Chat

We track whether native ads attract real engagement in conversations.

03

Lead Quality

The backend quality of enquiries matters more than cheap clicks.

Whoever runs these campaigns first gets the real data. We will be publishing our full data findings right here on the AdShot Media blog and our YouTube channel once the initial test concludes.

ChatGPT Ads Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get access to the ChatGPT Ads Manager?

Currently, the platform is in a closed beta. Access is being rolled out slowly to select agencies and brands. There is no public sign-up page for the ads manager at this time.

Are ChatGPT ads cheaper than Google Ads?

It is too early to tell. While the platform suggested a $3.00 CPC during our test setup, actual costs will depend heavily on market saturation. Right now, there is very low competition, which could lead to cheaper clicks, but lead quality remains untested.

Where do the ads actually appear in ChatGPT?

Ads are natively integrated into the chat interface when a user's prompt aligns with your "Context Hints." They feature a headline, a short description, and your brand's logo.

Should small businesses test ChatGPT Ads?

If you have a strict budget where every dollar needs to generate a guaranteed ROI, stick to proven channels like Google Search. If you have an experimental budget and want to be a first-mover in your industry, testing ChatGPT ads could provide a massive early advantage.
